End Of The Great Taboo

One Spa witnesses surge in male spa treatments

August 2007

During the last five years, One Spa at the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh, has recorded a 30% increase in the number of men having spa treatments, with over 20% of the total treatment quota being used by men. In addition, 35% of all the Spa's visitors are now men, a figure which has risen considerably in recent years.

In answer to this demand, the Spa has developed a series of spa treatments tailored specifically for the male market, including the Intensive Facial, Muscle Relaxing Massage, Deep Tissue Massage as well as Reflexology. According to the spa's bookings, massage tops the popularity polls, with facials coming a close second.

Research compiled by the Good Spa Guide provides a clue as to why active spa treatments such as massage and facials go down so well with men. According to their research, men are less interested than women in the idea of "chilling out" and "me-time" when they go to a Spa. They respond better to the idea of activity and benefit, with treatments that are physically and mentally effective. In other words, they want to feel that their skin is improved or that their muscles are relieved and any tension has been alleviated.

In addition to spa treatments, One Spa has also seen an increase in interest in men's skincare products and this has been reflected in the introduction of the first ESPA range for men.

Simply called ESPA Men, the new skincare range includes an assortment of products to renew, revitalise and refresh. Nine advanced skin care products are used in an easy six step ritual involving cleansing and exfoliating, shaving and soothing, hydrating and moisturising.

Mark Perkins, Director of One Spa, comments:

‘We have noticed a marked growth in men having spa treatments - it has always been the case that men have used our facilities, especially the state-of-the-art gym and rooftop hydropool, but spa treatments have historically been not as popular amongst our male visitors. It's great to see this is no longer the case and we are responding by providing a greater range of products and spa treatments designed for men.'

This purifying, hydrating and balancing treatment incorporates a triple cleanse procedure, incorporating hot towel compresses to soothe and aid the drainage that can lead to congestion and blocked pores. Following the relaxing face massage with acupressure points and lymphatic drainage, a deep shoulder and scalp massage is performed to release tight muscles and tension.

Muscle Relaxing Essential Body Massage

£70 55mins

The body is massaged with Fitness Oil to soothe aches and pains. A rich essential oil blend of cloves, rosemary and peppermint helps ease joint pain and stiffness, whilst relaxing and calming the muscles.

Deep Tissue Body Massage

£95 1hour 20mins

Hot stones are used with this sophisticated massage along with elbows and forearms to achieve a truly effective deep tissue massage. Ideal for clients experienced in massage, this treatment is not for the faint hearted or the novice.

Reflexology

£55 55mins

Reflexology is an oriental foot massage that concentrates on the pressure points of the feet, which correspond to different zones in the body. By having the entire body represented in the feet, reflexology offers a means of treating the body as a whole.

This holistic treatment involves massaging the reflex areas to restore the body's own healing capacity and natural energies. Reflexology is a gentle therapy that can treat both the symptoms and causes of a variety of problems such as migraines, back pain, poor circulation, digestive disorders and hormonal imbalances.

The treatment begins with a soothing footbath and is followed by an application of aromatic oils to assist deep relaxation and overall well-being.
